Just listened to an episode of *In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg* (a BBC 4 podcast) on pathogens. Since viruses are inert and can continue to exist (survive) for an extended period of time, and indeed without a host, and the sea contains a lot of viral material, what if the sea was full of dinosaur viruses? They ruled the earth for millions of years. In all these years, virus material got deposited in the oceans and has accumulated into a big soup of genetic debris. Maybe.
