James M. asks: when you think about Dungeons & Dragons, the cover of what product comes first to mind and the OSR explodes with posts – and he get more than 150 comments last time I looked. The sheer number of replies is astonishing.

That’s my favorite as well.

I think of the Metzner red box with the Larry Elmore cover art. I also think of the 1st edition PHB with the giant statue.

I guess the reason the D&D stuff is not so strong is that I got started with the Dark Eye and went from there to AD&D directly. We also switched to 2nd ed shortly thereafter so that those covers left a pretty strong impression, too.

Mondbuchstaben asked the same question regarding images that come to mind when we think of the Dark Eye, and listed the one (by *Bryan Talbot*) that I used to think of most often:

Due to that elven archer, the dragon eye, and the table for target size listing a penalty for trying to shoot something the size of a silver coin or *a dragon eye* I kept wanting to play elven archers that made called shot for the enemy’s eye. I also hoped for an instant kill, of course.

Alas, it was not to be. All I remember is that I ended up with a “sword master” AT 17 PA 8 (the Dark Eye has an active defense roll) able to make called shots. But I don’t remember what the effect was.
