2008-11-19 Manuel António

We stayed for two nights in Manuel António. At a crossroads in the national park – the most unlikely place of all – we saw three monkey tribes crossing paths all at the same time up in the trees. There was a lot twittering and jumping above and gaping and ahhhwing below. Then one of them peed on Claudia’s face. She was “not amused.” ;)

Our favorite animals on this trip have been crabs. Monkeys are for tourists. We biologists (hah!) prefer the more obscure animals. We found a tiny land crab on a big yellow flower. We saw tons of big bright red land crabs in a swamp, and – most favorite of all – we saw *tons* of hermit crabs in their various shells. There is nothing so cute as a hermit crab emerging from its little house and looking about with its big round eyes on top of two long stalks.

We also saw two mangrove boas resting up in a tree by the beach, and we had some racoons try and steal our stuff. (Shame on you if your first thought was “reverse dungeon” haha!!)
