When I listen to Belle & Sebastian or Portishead lyrics these days, I am reminded of something I realized about twenty years ago: The lyrics I like best are the lyrics that keep their sense of mystery. That usually means that they must be unintelligible but suggestive.
That reminds me of William S. Burroughs cut-up technique. The resulting novels were not readably. I tried reading excerpts of Naked Lunch. Weird wasn’t even the beginning. Unintelligible. But suggestive.
How could I forget. Another excellent example: Radiohead.
