Justin Alexander posted an article talking about Save-or-Die effects. First he establishes a sequence of such effects: from *Hold Person* (save every round), to *Sleep* (others wake you), to *Paralysis* (others cure you if you have the right resource handy), to instant kills such as *Finger of Death*. He proposes a solution that translates most of these to something closer to hit points: *Ability Damage*. He proposes to that when the ability reaches zero, the effect mentioned in the spell description effectively happens, and the ability damage represents your gradual sliding into that zone.
I like it, but to be honest I would sort of like it even better if this meant getting rid of saving throws. 😄

Get rid of saving throws? You mean have static defenses instead, or get rid of any resistance mechanic altogether?
