I think I like WolfgangBaur’s KoboldQuarterly. The issues have an interview I like, some rules discussion, an ecology article, a devil article, and so on. This issue (KQ2) had some reminders on making a city come to life: Use a sitcom as your model. Have a (small) recurring cast of reoccuring characters. Make them memorable. Your goal is achieved when your players want to visit a certain character known to them by name on their own accord. I’ll try to push this for my VaultOfLarinKarr game tomorrow.
In my RedHandOfDoom game the party has run into barghests once again. I’m starting to like them. And this Kobold Quarterly issue has an ecology article about them, including a Knowledge (the Planes) table and a nice pack leader. I think I’ll feature him as the barghest lord that made the deal with the Red Hand of Doom, explaining why the party is encountering so many of them. This will allow me to use even more of them, and it will allow the party to take their revenge eventually. I think they’ll like that.
