2007-10-19 Sandman

I have been fascinated by the covers of The Sandman for years. Whenever I opened them, however, I was turned off. Not my style.

The Sandman

A few weeks ago, a friend let me borrow *Preludes and Nocturnes* and *The Doll’s House*. I liked the idea, but it had too many sick ideas in it... Too much putrid flesh, child abuse, and psychopaths. Ugh!

The comics have received high praise, but I still can’t recommend them.

Ah, yes. They are definitely some dark and troubled themes in those comics. I felt the portrayal of those themes were well in context, but the themes do tend to lie on the borders of what people are comfortable dealing with. Gaiman doesn’t cover up the details and make it go away, and I like that. I particularly like the way he defines a world of dream and wonder that is devoid of that fairytale happy fluffy fairy crap that makes me sick. It’s ’realistic’, as far as dreams go.

To contradict your opinion I was gripped by the story. The only reason I put the first book down was because I couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer. The reason I put the second book down is because I finished it.
