2007-08-10 A Scanner Darkly

We just watched A Scanner Darkly (2006). Exceptional look: They shot the movie, and converted it into an animation, and it really works! I read A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick a long time ago. I felt that the movie reflected really well what I remembered, it managed to capture the paranoid identity confusion. It was like a totally different take of what Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) was all about.

Totally recommended.

A great example of how BooksToMovies can work.

Definitely. There’s nothing probably wrong with anything in the movie. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the Hollywood actors cast in the film, but there’s sort of an extra bit of irony in the movie because of it. The one weakness was that the ending was short, but tat’s probably keeping accurate with the book.

I just read the two last pages of the book again, and the corn field ending scene in the movie is identical to the end in the book.

As for the actors, I know Keanu Reaves and Winona Ryder, but I have no idea who has been involved in drug abuse stories, if that’s what this is about. 😄

I’ve still to see this, but it’s very high on my movie list.
