We booked our hotel via yeego.com. Claudia is really into these Internet sites when booking flights and hotels. And it seems to be paying off. My dad says the Mar Ipanema costs about as much as the Residência when he asks at the counter, but on the web we’re paying CHF 975 (Mar Ipanema, online) instead of CHF 1604 (Residência, at the counter). Amazing.

And no hidden costs? I’ve often wondered how these people manage to offer such low rates.

I think what happens is that these resellers work like traditional travel agencies, except they have very little real estate, people, and equipment to pay for, so it’s even cheaper. Travel agencies book big chunks. That’s how they make a profit, essentially allowing the hotel owner to rent out a large part of his rooms at a fixed price, well in advance. He reduces his risk at a price, where as the travel agencies carry the risk and get better rates. To mitigate the risks, they then have to sell to a wide demographic, making them independent of national economy ups and downs, etc.
Anyway, that’s my private little theory. 😄
