2007-04-06 Notes On A Scandal

We went to see Notes on a Scandal (2006). I loved the cold monologue of the diary, and I really liked Cate Blanchett. Much better than her short appearance in The Lord of the Rings as Galadriel. There was something in her eyes that reminded me of somebody...

Cate Blanchett

Recommended.

Recently we also saw two other movies. Two friends had each independently recommended one of them. The first was The Princess Bride (1987), the other was Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). It was unbelievable. Cary Elwes played in both movies. Both of them had a terrible script. When I realised that Men in Tights was going to be as bad as Princess Pride, I couldn’t stand it anymore. I had to stop.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

Not recommended at all.

Perhaps there’s a weird connection to Monthy Python movies. Perhaps you shouldn’t be sober when watching the movie. It was ... ugh!

Indeed, *Men in Tights* is no good, and never had a reputation. Mel Brooks has made many great comedies, and even contributed to supporting Terry Gilliam—of Monty Python fame—making the Sci-Fi classic Brazil (1985). But eventually one runs out of ideas as a film maker. Brooks films from Spaceballs (1987) and before (to the 1960s!) are classics.

I have to second that; I’ve never heard a single bad review of Pricess Bride. My friends all swear by it. I loved it, myself. My parents love it, and they’re not even particularly into fantasy.

But “Men In Tights” – I’ve never heard anybody say particularly good things about it.

“Have Fun Storming the Castle!” has become a catch-phrase in the USA, at least. If you say it, everyone knows what you’re talking about. So has, “After all... If you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got anything.” I’m pretty sure a few other quotes have come from that movie, out into the mainstream.

I have read that the phrase “Sicilian Reasoning” has made it into some game analysis papers, not sure if it’s true or not; No doubt, due to Princess Bride if it’s there.

Men in Tights has no such honors, that I know of.
