2006-12-22 Last Minute Presents

For all the geeks out there who cannot decide what to give to their girlfriends, here’s something that I did a few years back that worked really well:

1. Buy 20-50 index cards.

2. Get a pen.

3. Pick a few tasks you usually don’t like to do, but don’t really mind doing, or tasks that your loved one doesn’t like to do. Some ideas: Cooking, shopping for clothes or shoes, going out dancing, etc.

4. Pick a few mundane things that your loved one might want to buy or have, that don’t really make a good present. Some ideas: Clothes or shoes (you know where I’m coming from...), restaurants.

5. Depending on your budget, add a travel destination.

6. Put the stuff on the index cards, with humorous variations.

7. Wrap cards & you’re done!

Example cards:

1. *The Pot* (plus little pot drawing) – couch potato cooks for innocent lamb…

2. *The Pan* (plus little pan drawing) – prince cooks for princess…

3. *Destination: Africa* (plus little elephant drawing)

4. *Destination: Near East* (plus little burkha drawing)

5. *Foreign Cooks! (plus little chef drawing) – only valid with a destination card: invitation to an appropriate restaurant*

6. *Flight Power! (plus little airplane drawing) – only valid with a destination card: ticket for holidays in an appropriate country is forthcoming*

7. *Winter Shoes* (plus little boot drawing) – cheese-lover offers a pair of winter shoes or boots

8. *Smiling Porter* (plus grinning guy carrying two bags) – porter offers to carry bags for an afternoon shopping tour, always smiling!

9. *Pervert* (plus underwear drawing) – New underwear found in secret location

10. *Ruler of the Night* (plus vampire drawing) – I get to say where we’re going to tonight

11. *Small Miracle* (plus watch drawing) – we stay for an extra half hour

12. *Large Miracle* (plus watch drawing) – we stay for an extra hour (cannot be combined with other cards)

Whenever Claudia wants to use one of these cards, she quietly hands it over and I solemnly tear it to pieces, and do as I am told. She was quite impressed.

Claudia
