I was recently reading some material responding to the Danish comics controversey, and it seemed relevant to the discussions on this Web site at 2006-02-06 Islam Comics, Comments on 2006-03-10 Islam, and the concept of “RacismLight” generally. *Danish Cartoons: Racism Has No Place on the Left* by Deepa Kumar is quite good, and she has a followup with responses to common criticisms of the piece. Enjoy. – AaronHawley

Meh. I generally classify myself as “left-wing” - but that’s descriptive and not prescriptive. “I believe this and think that, so I’m mostly left-wing”, but I react quite negatively to “You’re left-wing, so you should believe this and think that” - which is a big part of the argument of that article :P Basically, instead of saying “The clash of civilization way of presenting things is wrong, because blablablah”, she says “If you believe in the clash of civilization thing, you’re a right-winger ! (And that should say enough!)”. (By the way, I don’t agree with the “clash of civilizations” way of presenting stuff either.)
I disagree with a lot in that article (I haven’t read through all of the second one though), but then we’ve already been through those things before 😄

Compared to her other points, this is – to me – a trivial matter of style. I guess my wish to “write like her” would not include that particular aspect. ;)
