Designing for simple blogging

Hm, some more little changes on Oddmuse:Blogging With Categories (which I use on this site as well). If you look at the previous post, 2005-09-07 Microformats Wikis, you’ll note that Wikis is listed on Categories, but *Microformats* is not. And yet, if you visit the previous post, there’s a link to the Microformats page in the goto bar, and if you follow the link, there’s a page with the appropriate journal!

Categories

I explicitly check whether Microformats is on the Categories page, and if not, I add the tag=1 parameter. If a page to be displayed is either on Categories, or the tag parameter is set, I automatically add the appropriate journal.

Both of these two tags (Microformats and Wikis) will have the rel=”tag” attribute set – using one of the microformats the page talks about. ;)

Designing for a simple website

Based on my experiments in trying to design the simplest possible wiki that would work for a family website, I designed the site for the Hug family. I then asked for feedback on #wiki, the WikiChannel.

Hug

I has a discussion with Sky Huvard aka. sky on #wiki. I had to change my question a bit, and so my question was the following:

Assuming that the site is very simple (a list of important pages, plus extra pages), then i want the easiest interface that allows visitors to find these important pages, and the easiest interface for the owner to determine the list of important pages. How would I do it?

He suggested a checkbox for inclusion in navigation. That would mean a special page that lists all the pages with a checkbox.

This assumes that the there are not a gazillion unimportant pages. Therefore this will not work for an ordinary blog.

One open question would be the order of the important pages. Sort them by popularity was sky’s suggestion. But how do you determine that...

Want to do a bit of ajax?

Put a side bar with the list of important pages, and add drag and drop so that it’s possible to drag the title of a page on the sidebar to add a page. (and to drag a title of a page from the sidebar out of the bar or to a trash icon to remove it). The sidebar is automatically saved upon change.

The content of the sidebar could be added automatically to the first page.
