Amazing news in TheRegister:
The European Parliament has voted by a massive majority to reject the software patents directive, formally known as the Directive on the Patentability of Computer Implemented Inventions. The vote to scrap the bill was passed by a margin of 648 votes to 14, with 18 abstentions. ¹
I’m surprised – I was resigned to see software patents come and take over, and I was resigned to see the EU parliament as a group of nincompoops... But it turns out I was wrong! Yay! 😄
Looking back at another article in TheRegister from 2005-06-21:
The European Directive on Computer Implemented Inventions edged closer to becoming law, yesterday, when the Parliamentary JURI committee voted to scrap most of the amendments to the directive put in place to restrict the patentability of pure software inventions. ²
