I often feel bad for picking on the US, so let me balance this account by stating that the numbers are higher and conditions are worse in Russia, if I remember correctly. (But then again, I think Russia is the *only* country with a higher percentage of people jailed...)
By the way, BBC describes the conditions of Brazilian jails as “medieval”. ² Yuck!
