Should I replace my EmpZ, I’d like the following:

EmpZ

Right now I would prefer no standard batteries, and I would prefer flash to harddisc.

The Neuros Digital Audio Computer plays ogg, and many other formats that I don’t concern myself with, has both a harddisc or flash variant, as a built in microphone and unpowered line-in jack, and can kind of be used without the special software - you can upload songs to a specific folder any way you want, but still need to build a database file the player can use - a command line or gui free software program for doing so at neurosdbm.sourceforge.net and a few other usefull features, the most so to me is the built-in FM *transmitter* so I can use it in my car without any adapters.

Oh yeah, Neuros also supports the open source movement, having open-sourced their special software quite a while ago, and recently open-sourced the firmware for the player.

Oh wow, this looks just like the thing I want! =) They don’t ship outside the USA, and I haven’t found a retailer that has them... I’ll ask Musik Kuhn since I bought my ShureHeadphones there, too.

Thanks for the info... $48US is more than 10% of the price, however... Ugh! We’ll see what the guys from the music shop say.

The guy from K55 says that it cannot be sold in Switzerland because of the built-in radio transmitter:

K55

der Neuros darf wegen des eingebauten Radio Senders nicht in der Schweiz verkauft werden.

Thanks for the links above. i.Beat cube, ice, and organix (after the promised firmware update) all look interesting.

None of them are available at the K55 shop here in Zürich, however. On K55 I found a recommendation for the iaudio G3. Battery lifetime seems to be the most amazing feature. And I still have some rechargeable AA batteries around.
