I’ve been listening to a lot of Reggae music from BigUpRadio. What strikes me most is how different rasta messages are from what we blieved them to be when we were young. When we were young, reggae music was about smoking pot, getting high, loving and fighting for freedom. When I listen to reggae music now, I hear religious fundamentalist overtones all over the place. Sure, they smoke weed. But they also talk about uprooting the bad weed, being righteous, keeping the faith, the power of Jah, and kingdom come. I remember faintly having heard about this when I was younger, but I had forgotton. So now I get this cognitive dissonance between the music, memories of what we dressed up back then, how many of us drank too much, smoked to much – tobaccao, marijuana, and pot – trying to find our way in life, and listening to reggae music, and them singing about the righteous way, the power of Jah, as weird as new-born Christians, and sometimes I have this flash of Jar-Jar Binks walking from one side of my brain to the other, in his weird gait, babbling, singing, and then more of Jah. Hilarious. 😄
