Went to see *Fond Kiss* by Ken Loach (IMDB:0380366) the other day. It has Pakistanis with Scottish accents, which took some getting used to. 😄 The basic idea was a typical generation conflict, culture stuff, etc. The interesting part was how the *father* was portrayed by Ahmad Riaz. Eventhough he exhibited so many of the traits often criticised in these movies, he played a very believable role. He actually *cared* about his children and just didn’t know better. I liked that a lot. I also liked Eva Birthistle as a strong woman.
Some of the acting didn’t go down too well. There’s a scene, for example, where she looses her job and he has to go and meet some bankers. She wants him to stay: Don’t go! But he has to... If she cried, if she actually *looked* as if she needed help, he would have stayed, but she was strong, and there was no *need* for him to stay, and so he left. I’m not sure how interpret this directing decision: Was this to illustrate a (small) fault in her character, admitting that she did not really need his company? If so, it was very well done. If, on the other hand, she was supposed to look like she really needed help, it was a failure. Thus, some mixed feelings about the believability of the people portrayed.
