Had a discussion on #emacs about the MP3 patent...
the mp3 story is really a shame. What makes me sick is that it was invented by a *public* institute. While ogg vorbis was invented by a company. There you are. Weird world.
Somebody else suggested I look at the iFP-790 from iRiver. Plays OGG files, has an FM tuner, records sounds – but costs about 20-25% more, and the EMP-Z is flat; I can wear it under my shirt without a problem. Oh well. Next time. ;)
I just ordered another EMP-Z for Claudia. :D
On a related note, I’ve started to use mp3gain to normalize MP3 files, and I’ve used mp3burn to burn the MP3 files to a normal audio disk.
mp3gain -r *.mp3 foo.mp3 Applying mp3 gain change of -3 to foo.mp3... WARNING: foo.mp3 may clip with mp3 gain change -37 Make change? [y/n]:
Yikes! What to do! Why does it say -3 first, and then -37? What does clipping do?
It seems that it worked. This one mp3 file was the only one with an adjustment of -37, all the others were in the range of ±5. And all of them play just fine. Cheerio for FreeSoftware!
