I think she found AadityaSood’s blog via JohnWiegley’s page, where I followed a link back to her blog and found the following playlist ¹:
I *love* Natacha Atlas and Transglobal Underground! I shall check out the other stuff she listed. I *think* Thievery Corporation is lounge music, which is often boring. But who knows!
The official websites usually suck. Either no samples at all, or stupid Real Audio crap I don’t want to install. Why can’t they just offer MP3 or OGG files!? In fact, they suck so much that I removed the links to the homepages again. 😄

If you have a realplayer binary, you can use vsound to extract the audio stream into a file. Pretty neat trick too. Try it out 😄

Alex, I forgot to say that both iTunes music store and amazon.com have brief samples. You may also find something on launch.com. Also, amazon.com has free MP3 downloads for Thievery Corporation, hopefully at this URL: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006CY6H/qid=1088468654/sr=8-2/ref=pd_ka_2/002-1899413-5991245?v=glance&s=music&n=507846
I will come back later to comment on your comment re. Chad’s blog and spirituality. It’s an interesting discussion. Regards, Daniela

Thanks! I’m listing to “Right Angles remix” and “It Takes A Thief”...
[time passes...]
Searching for *massive attack internet radio* and thievery corporation internet radio’’ both led me to http://www.voyagerradio.com/, which I will have to listen to. I’ll point streamripper at their URL for a while and see what gives.
I feel like a fisher, throwing my bait into an ocean of sounds. I wonder if anything will bite?
[time passes...]
Yikes. They broadcast from live365.com... streamripper doesn’t like it [SR_ERROR_NOT_SHOUTCAST_STREAM], and on one of the help pages it says:
Due to legal reasons, you can not save the stream of the Live365 broadcast to your hard drive. You can only listen to the broadcasts with a player. We recommend using Player365. :{
[time passes...]
Oh, I found them on SomaFM! ¹ I like SomaFM because they have two excellent streams I have already been listening to.

I should look for a Raï Internet radio... I have about 10 or 12 Raï CDs... Perhaps that is enough to start broadcasting myself? 😄

Interesting - I wanted to stream music for my friends and did not know if there is a feasible and legal way to go about it. Do you know? I guess I should go googling, but if you know off the top of your head, doesn’t hurt to ask...

Sure. The Shoutcast server seems to be very popular.
I searched for some free software packaged with Debian, too. Are you using Windows?
Personally, I’d probably try gnump3d first, because it looks so simple, but then again I like (very!) simple design. 😄
This one could be tricky because it requires Apache, PHP, and MySQL. There is a Windows installation guide, however. ²
The Artekopia Netjuke is a Cross-Platform & Web-Based Audio Streaming Jukebox powered by PHP 4, an increasing choice of databases and all the MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Windows Media Audio, and other formats files that constitute your digital music collection. The Netjuke aims at enabling families and small organizations or communities to run a private “mp3.com-like” Web site to access the music they legitimately own, distribute or are granted access to.
It supports most audio players, language packs (English, French, Catalan, German, Spanish), optional file downloads, media protection schemes, multi-level security, shared and private playlists, random playlists, images, etc. Also features an unusual, easy-to-use installer module to get you started in minutes (once you have php and a db). See the feature list below and documentation to the right for more information.
See http://netjuke.sourceforge.net for more information.

This one seems very slick, and even mentions Mac OS X. ³
SLIMP3 is an audio broadcasting system. It can stream music in the MPEG Layer III format, and supports multiple playlists on a single port through source ip “players”.
Many audio players can listen to SLIMP3 streams, such as XMMS or Winamp and especially the SLIMP3 hardware player available at http://www.slimp3.com/
Is Shoutcast compatible, but no Windows installation guide. Could be tricky.
Icecast is an audio broadcasting system. It can stream music in the MPEG Layer III format, and supports multiple streams on a single port through the use of “mountpoints”.
Many audio players can listen to Icecast streams, as it’s been built to remain compatible with Nullsoft Shoutcast. Popular clients such as XMMS or Winamp can also stream audio to an icecast server, using specific plugins.
See http://www.icecast.org/
It has a Windows installation guide ⁴, a Max OS X installation guide ⁵, and is Perl based. (For Windows, get ActivePerl.) Should be easy to get going.
GNUMP3d is a small, portable, and robust server for streaming MP3s, OGGs, and other multimedia files.
It presents a simple and attractive interface to web browsers, which allows you to navigate through your music collection.
Individual files may be streamed, as can whole directory trees.
Other features include the ability to see your most popular tracks, and to search your collection for songs.
See http://www.gnump3d.org

Thanks - WOW! I had no clue... I am using Mac OS X. I’ll look into this.

Remember that if you have a cheap link to the Internet, your *upload* bandwidth can be a lot less than your download bandwidth. Since broadcasting means that your server will be uploading the streams to your buddies, that might be a problem. It would be for my home machine, for example. 😄
