Link by jordanb on #emacs... I found a page on their website via Google entitled *Cost-of-Living 2004 rankings coming in mid-June* ¹ It doesn’t contain the above image, however. Instead, there’s a link to the report from 2003, *Global Cost-of-Living Survey – 2003* ². Their link to the old press release is dead. Shitty website.
There is, however, another page available, *Global survey reveals wide discrepancies in salary purchasing power* ³. Note, however, that this is only for *senior managers*:
Mercer examined the average salaries of senior managers in 50 countries worldwide, and calculated their purchasing power based on tax and social security deductions and the local cost of living. Its research showed that senior managers in Hong Kong score highest in the purchasing power rankings and can buy almost seven times more with their salaries than those in other countries. Switzerland and Ecuador follow in second and third place respectively.
I also found a “hardship survey” called *Vienna joins Melbourne and Vancouver at the top* ⁴:
The latest hardship survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit rates Melbourne, Vancouver and Vienna as the easiest cities in the world for expatriates to live in. As in the previous survey, Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea, is branded the worst place to live. The biggest climber in the chart was Hong Kong, rising 11 places in the ranking thanks to a 2% rise in living standards. The war in neighbouring Iraq saw Kuwait fall furthest in the rankings—by ten places—although Harare suffered the greatest actual drop in living standards as a result of ongoing unrest.
