TAOUP is interesting read. http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Biculturalism.html is a rather balanced review.

Thanks for that link. I guess I never did much Windows-specific programming either, even though my day-job uses only Windows machines. No COM objects, no Active-X, no Visual Basic, no Visual Studio... I guess with me being a Database person we get all these Database-specific tools like Developer 2000 by Oracle (which I never used), SQL Windows _ Centura by Gupta, and now a home-grown client_server application development framework that puts heavy emphasis on writing SQL statements... Lucky me, I guess. 😄 And I admit freely that I believe **programming for programmers is better**:

1. fun

2. quality

3. exploration

4. knowledge

And since Claudia started using my box, surfing the web with Firefox and reading mail with Gnus, burning CDs using a couple of shell scripts I wrote for her (cdrecord based)... I dunno... Things are looking brighter for the ’nix headz... ;)

Truly, ESR is a total nut when it comes to politics... ¹
