Ever since I started to use JohnWiegley’s command-line double-accounting ledger, I’ve tried to keep an account of every single expense. I’m trying to find out how much money I’m spending on what.

1. At the end of the month I get my account history from the bank. I double-check with the info in my ledger and add the missing entries. Ledger has a command that prints the running total for one account; that makes double-checking very easy.

2. One of the accounts I have is the cash in my purse. I count the money in my purse and compare it with the balance of my cash account. I add a manual correction entry for the money that went missing.

3. Something I’m not yet doing: Compare the accounts I have for my online bookshop and my online CD-shop with the information they have on their website about my past purchases.

Yesterday I spent about two hours doing the above. Yuck!
