The Iraq War has reached my living room. Claudia knows an Iraqi Kurd and likes him very much. He has been living here for three years and eleven months, participating in program designed to integrate refugees. After four years they get an official working permit (ie. until then they are not “working”, they just work while they are “learning” for less money, of course). One month before he gets the working permit, he is being sent back to Iraq. “The north is safe,” they say. So we get to be typical Nazi collaborators: “Terribly sorry, I’d love to help you, but the law is the law.” We could also break the law as the WWII hero Paul Grüninger did ¹ who admited hundreds of jewish refugees into the country. Officially the only way out is for Claudia’s friend to marry. People are taking migration problems into their own feeble hands by exploiting the institution “marriage” (aka. “marriage blanc”) to solve the world’s economic injustice. Reminds me of the fact that the human rights are not only about freedom of speech, but I don’t need to quote them here, right? Anyway, you can all imagine what happened, and how we all feel right now.
