I took my family on an overnight camping trip to thr Ashley National Forest in Utah last weekend. We chose to camp in an area for dispersed camping instead of using a campground mostlly due to the fact that all campgrounds in Wyoming and the part of Utah closest to us appear to be full... also I dislike camping near other people. It went very well. My new DIY oil cloth tarp did not leak in rain. I made it until 3am with just a USGI poncho liner over me in my hammock before waking up cold and putting on my sleeping bag.
I have watched videos by people in the American South that tell you how to stay cool while summer camping. Here in the Rockies, you need to be thinking about staying warm. My wife slept in a tent with wool blankets and was toasty. I had my sleeping bag in reserve, but did not initially use it. Next time I too will use a wool blanket.
